Ascension v Christ Church
After a
convincing win against league leaders Stretton, Ascension had a score to settle
against Christ Church after losing last time..
Captain Kev
returned to the side, won the toss and put us in to bat with the mighty Ste
Critchley and Mal Haill.
Ste wasted
no time and not much energy as he smashed the Christ Church bowlers out of the
ground scoring 27 in just over 2 overs as Mal struggled at the other end
scoring 6 runs before being caught by an edge.
Rick Clarke
(25) and Danny Oliver (26) dependable as ever both batted well with Danny
hitting 3 6’s in a row and Rick finishing with a 6 helping Ascension to a
flying start before things slowed down with Matt Everson also struggling to score
with the ball swinging about scoring 4 runs before being bowled out..
Ray Potts
looked like he was on for a big score after hitting a big 6 taking him up to 10
runs, he was also bowled clean after not picking the ball on an unpredictable
pitch.
Last in were
Neil Ford (8no) and John Haill (5no), both also struggled to get the ball away
as the pitch dug up around the crease. After a few boo’s from the crowd
Ascension finished on 123 for 4 which was looking like a low score with a very
short boundry..
The amazingly
talented Ste Critchley opened the bowling with spin instead of his usual fast
pace and it paid off as he had the batsmen swatting flies with a double wicket
maiden in his first over including a good catch on the boundry from Neil Ford!
Ste ended
with 2 for 2 with Matt Everson also bowling well (0 for 8) giving the start
Ascension needed.
Rick Clarke
(0 for 5) and Danny Oliver (0 for 3) both superb leaving Christ Church on just
18 runs after 8 overs!
It looked
all over for the visitors as vice captain Neil Ford came on next to bowl taking
a wicket with his first ball then 2 dot balls but thats as good as it got as disaster
struck and runs came quicker and easier the shits he had all last week.
An amazing
30 runs came from the next 8 balls as Neil was destroyed and Christ Church were
back in the game.
John Haill
took the next wicket with a good stumping from brother Mal ending with 1 for 10
whilst captain Kev was unlucky not to take a wicket (0 for 10).
Anthony
Griffiths again took another wicket and could of had another (1 for 13) as the
church side edged closer to the target score.
Ray Potts,
this years leading wicket taker came up with the goods again stopping the run
rate and taking a wicket (1 for 5) whilst Mal Haill (1 for 6) also bowled well
to finish off Christ Church on 97 for 7 keeping Ascensions good run going.
Stretton v Ascension
Match report is below.... Dont ask...
A must win
game for Ascension after losing to Stretton earlier in the season and without
captain Kev it was another hard fought win!
Stretton won
the toss and opened the batting but a good solid start from Ste Critchley (1
for 2) saw the early break through.
Ian
Griffiths (0 for9) bowled well with Matt Everson (0 for13). Rick Clarke (1 for
8) got the next wicket at a good time as Stretton settling in.
Anthony
Griffiths (1 for 8) bowled superb under pressure with another vital wicket
whilst Ian Shuttleworth (1 for 7) bowled with extra pace again splitting the
stumps!
Neil Ford (0
for 4) gave nothing away keeping Stretton from scoring whilst Danny Oliver
ripped the batsmen apart taking 3 for just 2 runs!
Coach Potts
(2 for 5) and Mal Haill (0 for8) both kept the pressure on right to the end as
Ray took the last wicket leaving Stretton on just 70 runs all out giving Ascension
a good target!
As always
Ste Critchley (25) opened the batting with Mal Haill and both batted well giving
Ascension the start that was needed although Mal was caught on 23.
Rick Clarke seen
off some good bowlers before being bowled on 13 although Danny Oliver who hadn’t
lost his wicket all season went for a duck! Quack quack.. After telling
everyone that he didn’t have a batting average, he does now..
Matt Everson
ended on 5 not out and Ian Griffiths 0 not out as Ascension reached 72 for 3
with 4 overs to spare, a convincing win!
Ascension v Woolston Teachers
Ascension
had a lot to live up to after hitting a record score against the teachers last
game and didn’t disappoint!
Steve
Critchley smacked 27 in just 3 overs losing 3 balls in the process, Matt
Everson Struggled to get 3 runs before being caught in the field.
Mal Haill
also struggled to get going and was bowled on just 5 runs as brother John came
in and lasted just a couple of balls for another duck!
Ascension
lost 3 wickets for just a couple of runs as a collapse was on the cards until
Ray Potts came in to bring the score back up retiring on 26.
Lee Stoll in
just his second game strolled to 27 whilst Ian Griffiths smashed 29 edning with
a big 6!
The score
was big enough to win but the runs kept coming, Dave Shingler scored a quick 10
before being caught and Anthony Griffiths knocked 18 not out with captain Kev
coming in at no.10 and scoring a good 26 before Tony Ford got a rare outing
with the bat adding 1 to the total record (again) breaking score of 183 for 4!
Woolston
High were never going to win, Ste Critchley (1 for9), Matt Everson with 2
maiden overs (0 for 0) Ian Griffiths (0 for 9), John Haill (0 for 8) Lee Stoll
(0 for 6) Anthony Griffiths with an excellent 1 for 4, Tony Ford (0 for 7)
Captain Kev (0 for 13) Mal Haill (0 for 8) and Coach Potts finishing off with 0
for 2 leaving the Teachers on 77 for 2 as Andy Funnellscored 25 runs from 20 overs!
Anthony Griffiths Was voted Man Of The Match!!
Woolston Teachers v Ascension
A game that
Ascension always enjoy playing, Woolston teachers don’t usually trouble the
mighty Ascension and this time it was no different!
Ascension
opened the batting with Ste Critchley and newcomer Lee Stoll who both punished
the teachers bowling from the very start by scoring nearly every run with fours
until Ste was caught going for the big hit on 21 runs.
Danny Oliver
came in next and continued where Ste left off hitting the boundrys along with
Lee taking Ascensions score to 58 off just 5 overs as Lee retired on 25.
Neil Ford
came in next as Danny also retired on 25 giving Ascension a fantastic start of
around 76 for 1 off 6 overs although Neil struggled to get going with Ian
Griffiths also slow to score.
Neil scraped
8 runs before being caught trying to hit a six by the worst fielder on the
pitch as T-urn started to hit a few runs on his way to 25.
John
Haillgot his first score of the season
before being caught behind for 13 runs, Dave Shingler batted well although a
mix up saw Anthony Griffiths run out without facing a ball in his first game of
the season.
Dave was
caught for 19 runs as Ascension powered to 154 from 16 overs. Captain Kev came
in next batting well for 17 runs before being bowled as Ascension looked to
beat their all timetop score of 168.
Last in was
the night watchman Tony Ford with Ray Potts with only 2 overs to go. Tony
pushed 2 runs with Ray hitting a four as Tony was bowled out giving Ascension a
club record score of 173 for 7!!
The game was
already won for Ascension as the teachers had no chance of beating the massive
score. Ste Critchley (0 for 4) opened the bowling as good as ever with a maiden
over with Danny Oliver also doing well ( 0 for 8).
The first
wickets came from John Haill (2 for 11) caught
by coach Potts although the coach did jump out of the way of the ball giving
john the only boundry from his bowling much to the displeasure of John!
Tony Ford (0
for 8) Bowled well again as Anthony Griffiths at the other end also bowled some
of his best bowling yet (0 for 12).
Ian
Griffiths continued his excellent bowling with a maiden first over ending with
0 for just 3! Neil Ford (1 for 18) came in next and was pasted round the park
in his first over although he recovered in his second taking a good wicket as
Ascension controlled the game.
Lee Stolll
(0 for 9) bowled with pace in his first over before changing to spin with an
excellent over.
Captain Kev
again bowled (1 for 6) well taking another wicket as the teachers struggled to
cope as the light started to fade.
Last up was
Ray Potts on a hat trick ball but the pressure got to him as he bowled wide but
took a wicket on the next ball! Another wide was followed by another wicket ending
the game with 2 for 6.
The best
moment of the game came as John Haill chased a ball midwicket trying to stop a
four at full speed and lost all coordination of his legs as his body got closer
to the floor!
Nice effort
John!!
Woolston
teachers were taught a lesson as they ended on 97 for 8!
Ste Critchley Was Voted Man Of The Match!!
Seven Woods v Ascension (Cup)
After Losing 2 games in the league a cup run was now the target for Ascension and with a strong side out it proved to be an easy win putting them into the semi finals.
Captain Kev returned to the side as Ascension bowled first with Ste Critchley taking a wicket with his second ball in his first game of the season.
Ian Shuttleworth (0 for 12) again bowled well with Mal Haill taking a good catch behind from Ste Critchley (1 for 5).
Danny Oliver produced some excellent bowling losing just 1 run from his 2 overs and unlucky not to take a couple of wickets while at the other end Matt Everson was keeping the batsmen in the crease losing just 2 runs from wide balls.
Ian Griffiths (1 for 11) took the next wicket splitting the stumps with Neil Ford (1 for 7) also taking a wicket at the other end with one of the few good deliveries of the over whilst the rest of the balls were smashed at Ian Shuttleworth who managed to stop most of them with a different part of his body each time resulting in an inevitable injury..
With Ian having to leave the game with injured knee’s, ankles and fingers John Smith came on to field.
John Haill (1 for 7) took the next wicket with a good catch from Ste Critchley and at the other end captain Kev (1 for 2) also collected a wicket with another catch from Neil..
Alan Bostock (1 for 6) split the stumps with some good bowling whilst Ray Potts (3 for 0) blitzed the tail end finishing Seven Woods off on a score of 71 all out.
After some poor batting in the last 2 games Ascension were looking for improvements as Ste Critchley opened with Mal Haill.
Both batsmen got off to a good start although Ste Critchley was dropped on just 4 runs which proved fatal for Seven Woods as he raced on to 23 before hitting a beast of a shot for 6 getting him into the run race with Rick Clarke and Danny Oliver.
Mal Haill was back on form and never looked like losing his wicket playing some quality strokes around the pitch to retire on 26.
It was just what Ascension needed effectively winning the game as Matt Everson and Neil Ford finished the batting off scoring 7 and 6 not out ending Seven Woods cup run.
Mall Haill Was Voted Man Of The Match!!
Ascension v Stretton
After losing for the first time in 18 months against Christ Church last week Ascension lost again against league rivals Stretton losing ground in the title race.
With Captain Kev away it was up to Neil Ford to take control of the team and after losing the toss Ascension started the game with only 10 men again.
Rick Clark (0 for 11) opened the bowling and was unlucky to concede a couple of edges to the boundry while at the other end Ian Shuttleworth (1 for 2) continued his impressive pace bowling finding a wicket on his first ball with a good catch by Matt Everson and losing just 1 run in his first over giving Ascension the start that was needed.
Matt Everson and Neil Ford came up next and Stretton punished the lose balls from both bowlers in their first overs including a big 6 out the ground against Neil.
Both second overs were much improved although the Stretton umpires were giving wides for balls that were almost touching leg stump! Matt ended on 0 for 16 and Neil 0 for 12 having had a hard catch put down as Stretton pulled away around the 45 runs mark.
Danny Oliver (0 for 6) again bowled superb to slow the run rate backed up well by Alan Bostock (1 for 9) taking the second wicket to bring Ascension back into the game.
Tony Ford (0 for 6) kept Stretton at bay as they struggled for runs until the captain made a big mistake by bowling the stand in player Mike. Mike was punished in his over losing 17 runs giving Stretton the release that was needed although Mike did take a wicket with a catch from Danny.
Captain Ford made the decision to bring Mal Haill on to bowl instead of Mike and it proved a good one as Mal took another wicket for just 5 runs.
John Haill and Ray Potts finished off for Ascension, both bowling well each taking a wicket for 9 runs leaving Stretton with a score of 110.
So it was down to the batsmen to beat 110 which is normally no problem for Ascension on their home ground but the bad luck continued as Mal was caught for just 4 runs and Matt Everson struggled to get going with some good bowling from Stretton.
After reaching 9 runs Matt was also caught out with John Haill also struggling before being bowled for a duck.
It was looking like a complete disaster for Ascension as they fell apart at the crease with a score of 14 of 7 overs for 3 wickets.
Trusty Rick Clark came in next and also couldn’t get at the ball as he was joined by Danny Oliver.
It wasn’t long before Rick was caught and bowled for just 3 runs making the captain sweat as it looked like it could be Ascensions worst ever score until Danny and Ray Potts both got stuck into the ball giving Ascension some needed runs.
Danny looked good and started knocking boundry’s as Ray was caught for 10 runs.
Stand in Mike was next in and got straight onto the score board supporting Danny well although the overs were disappearing fast.
Danny retired on 26 pulling Ascension out of the sh!t as captain Neil came in next having not lost his wicket all season he was feeling confident of hitting a score.
It didn’t last long as the ducks started circling and Neil hit a full toss straight up in the air to top his night off.
With only a couple of overs to go Alan Bostock went in and batted well along with Mike who both ended not out, Mike on 12, Alan on 8..
Ascension fell well short of the target required although the final score of 81 was at least respectable, they simply weren’t good enough in a few of the overs bowling and the normally reliable batsmen not scoring..
This week see’s the return of Captain Kev and a cup tie against Seven Woods..
